As Autumn draws closer, as school approaches...I cannot help but to feel a little twinge of sadness every time I look at the calendar. Sure, I love Autumn, the beautiful burnt colors, the crisp leaves, the sweet smells, the new back-to-school supplies, yet, it means that the summer is drawing to a close. Summer; the one time of year when you are truly allowed to be yourself, the time when you can relax and enjoy the wonders of the world without the of trivial daily events of during the school year.


For me, Autumn not only marks the end of carefree bliss for another 365 days, but the start of the annual play.


The new clothes you recieve, the new jeans, the new shirts, sweaters, coats...are merely the costumes.


There is no plot nor script, simply the drama and gossip to follow during the year.


The school where you will spend the majority of the remaining 3 seasons until the summer? That, my dear, is the stage.


And thus begins the masquerade. As people forget who their true personalities are and replace them with masks, mere illusions of themselves, the roles are set. Out goes the kind and sweet girl who enjoys spending her summer helping out at the hospital, and in goes the bitchy, snarky cheerleader. This process is repeated over and over again, at every school, in every country, throughout the world.


This is how you get to the cliques found at schools wherever you go. The "jocks", "preps", "nerds", "cheerleaders", "goths"...people shed their true identities for the fear of being left out, of being a "loser", of not being popular, of acceptance...Such conformity disgusts me.


People lose themselves, their personalities, their styles, and their dreams during the school year.


I sigh, put my disguise on as well, and brace myself
